Glazed donuts are a classic, warm, soft, and perfectly sweet treat that’s perfect for breakfast or a snack. This recipe gives you homemade donuts with a rich, glossy glaze that adds the right amount of sweetness.

Ingredients

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

3 cups all-purpose flour

Vegetable oil, for frying

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Stir and let sit for about 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir to combine.
  4. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  8. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters to cut out donut shapes. Set the donuts aside to rise again for 20-30 minutes.
  9. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F. Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, frying for 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  10. Remove the donuts from the oil and let them cool slightly on a paper towel-lined plate.
  11. In a separate bowl, mix together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to create the glaze.
  12. Dip each donut into the glaze, ensuring it’s fully coated. Place on a wire rack to set the glaze.
  13. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Glazed donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • If you prefer a thicker glaze, add more powdered sugar or adjust the milk for desired consistency.
  • You can freeze the donuts before glazing; just thaw and glaze when ready to serve.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature (350°F) for the best frying results.
  • If using milk alternatives like almond or oat milk, make sure it’s warm for yeast activation.
