Creamy Chicken Paprikash is a Hungarian classic that combines tender chicken with a rich, creamy sauce and the warm, aromatic flavor of paprika. This hearty dish is perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

4 chicken thighs (bone-in, skin-on)

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons paprika (preferably Hungarian)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup chicken broth

1 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 tablespoon butter

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken thighs, skin-side down, and sear for 5-7 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Flip and cook for another 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the paprika (both regular and smoked) and cook for 1 minute to release the spices’ aroma.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Return the chicken to the pan, skin-side up, and reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pan and set aside again. Stir the sour cream into the sauce, and let it simmer for 3-5 minutes to thicken slightly.
  6. Return the chicken to the skillet, spoon some of the creamy sauce over the top, and cook for an additional 2 minutes to reheat the chicken.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for extra flavor, but chicken breasts can also be substituted.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add a chopped chili pepper or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • If the sauce is too thin, you can thicken it by simmering longer or adding cornstarch.
  • Great to serve with egg noodles, rice, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread.
