Ingredients

  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (95-110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • Canola oil for frying
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Proof the yeast: In a stand mixer bowl, combine yeast, warm milk, and honey. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  • Make the dough: Add flour, salt, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Use a dough hook to knead for 5 minutes until the dough is slightly sticky but pulls away from the bowl.
  • Let the dough rise: Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, until doubled in size.
  • Shape the doughnuts: Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out doughnuts. Gather the remaining dough, roll it out, and repeat.
  • Fry the doughnuts: Heat canola oil in a pot to 350°F. Fry doughnuts in batches for 2 minutes per side, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  • Coat in cinnamon sugar: Mix sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Roll each doughnut in the mixture until fully coated.

Notes

  • Storage: Keep leftover doughnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, bake at 350°F for 5 minutes or microwave for 15-20 seconds.
  • Variations: Try using powdered sugar, filling with jam or custard, or topping with a sweet glaze instead of cinnamon sugar.
  • Make-Ahead: Prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate it to fry the doughnuts the next day.
