Salisbury Steak is a comforting dish featuring juicy beef patties smothered in a savory mushroom and onion gravy, perfect for family dinners or weeknight meals.

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef

1 large egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

Pepper to taste

1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)

1 medium onion, sliced or chopped

8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons flour

1 3/4 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Add all the beef patty ingredients (except for olive oil) to a large bowl. Mix well with your hands, then shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, ensuring they’re about 1/2-3/4 inch thick.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side, until they are nicely browned. Transfer them to a plate and set aside. Leave the fat in the skillet.
  3. Add sliced onions and mushrooms to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 7-9 minutes, until the mushrooms are nicely seared and the liquid has evaporated. Transfer to the same plate as the beef patties.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and add butter to the skillet. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour, stirring often for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, ensuring the flour dissolves completely into the sauce. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder.
  5. Return the cooked onions, mushrooms, and beef patties (with any juices) back to the skillet. Let it simmer for another 5-7 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked through and the gravy has thickened. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of water or more beef broth to reach your desired consistency. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a lighter option, swap the ground beef for lean ground turkey or chicken.
  • Feel free to add more vegetables like carrots or peas to the gravy for added flavor and nutrition.
  • You can use button mushrooms or portobello mushrooms for a different flavor profile.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To freeze, let the patties and gravy cool completely, then store them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.
