Craving freshly baked bread but short on time? This quick German bread recipe is the perfect solution! With just 5 minutes of prep, you’ll have a crusty, golden loaf that’s soft on the inside. Perfect for sandwiches, soups, or simply enjoying with butter. No special equipment needed—just simple ingredients and an easy method!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp honey or sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  • Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, instant yeast, and salt. Add warm water and honey (or sugar), stirring until a rough, sticky dough forms. If using, mix in olive oil for extra moisture.

  • Knead the Dough: Lightly flour a surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add extra flour if needed.

  • Let the Dough Rise: Shape into a ball, cover, and let it rest in a warm spot for 5-10 minutes.

  • Preheat the Oven: Heat oven to 425°F (220°C). If using a Dutch oven, preheat it inside the oven.

  • Shape & Bake: Form the dough into a loaf, place on a baking sheet or inside the preheated Dutch oven. Score the top with a sharp knife. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. If using a Dutch oven, remove the lid in the last 5-10 minutes for extra crustiness.

  • Cool & Serve: Let cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm with butter, cheese, or jam!

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the baked loaf with melted butter.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Add sunflower seeds, herbs, or whole wheat flour for variations.
