A handheld version of the classic Philly cheesesteak, baked in golden, flaky dough. Filled with tender steak, melted cheese, sautéed peppers, and onions, it's the ultimate comfort food.

Ingredients

1 pound ribeye steak or sirloin, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 green bell pepper, sliced

1 onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

2 cloves garlic, minced

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 package pizza dough or homemade pizza dough

8 ounces provolone cheese, sliced

8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced steak and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove the steak and set it aside.
  2. In the same skillet, melt the butter, then add the green bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Return the steak to the skillet and stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle shape.
  5. Layer the provolone cheese and mozzarella cheese evenly over the center of the dough. Top with the cooked steak and vegetable mixture, spreading it evenly. Leave about 1-inch border along the edges of the dough.
  6. Carefully roll the dough from one edge to the other, ensuring the filling stays inside. Pinch the seams to seal and tuck in the ends to create a neat roll.
  7. Place the stromboli on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg. Make a few slits along the top to allow steam to escape.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Allow the stromboli to cool for a few minutes before slicing into individual servings.

Notes

  • Vegetarian Version: Swap the steak for sautéed mushrooms, zucchini, and spinach for a vegetarian twist.
  • Different Cheese: Try using cheddar, American, or even a blend of cheeses for a different flavor profile.
  • Add Spice: For a spicier version, add sliced jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the filling.
  • Storage: Store any leftover stromboli in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat stromboli in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-12 minutes or until heated through. You can also microwave individual slices, but the dough won’t be as crispy.
