Salisbury Steak is a classic comfort food with tender beef patties smothered in a savory gravy made with Campbell’s French onion soup. This recipe is simple, quick, and full of flavor, perfect for family dinners or cozy meals.

Ingredients

1 (10 1/2 ounce) can Campbell's French onion soup

1 1/2 lbs ground beef

1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs

1 egg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1/4 cup ketchup

13 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, to taste

1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together 1/3 cup of condensed French onion soup with ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Shape the mixture into 6 oval patties.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown both sides of the patties.
  4. Pour off any excess fat from the skillet.
  5. In a small bowl, blend the remaining French onion soup and flour until smooth.
  6. Mix in ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard powder.
  7. Pour the mixture over the patties in the skillet.
  8. Cover the skillet and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Notes

  • For a Mushroom Salisbury Steak, add sliced mushrooms to the skillet when browning the patties.
  • For a vegetarian version, use plant-based meat and vegetable broth instead of French onion soup.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the gravy for a spicy kick.
  • For a cheese lover's version, top each patty with melted cheddar or Swiss cheese.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
