The Mai Tai is a classic tropical cocktail that combines rum, fruit juices, and a hint of almond flavor. Known for its vibrant appearance and delightful balance of sweetness and tartness, it’s the perfect drink to transport you to a sun-soaked beach.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces white rum

3/4 ounce dark rum

1/2 ounce lime juice (freshly squeezed)

1/2 ounce orange liqueur (such as Curaçao or triple sec)

1/4 ounce orgeat syrup

1/4 ounce simple syrup

Crushed ice

Mint sprig and lime wedge for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a shaker with crushed ice.
  2. Add the white rum, dark rum, lime juice, orange liqueur, orgeat syrup, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  3. Shake well for about 10-15 seconds to combine the ingredients.
  4. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with crushed ice.
  5. Gently float the dark rum on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
  6. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lime wedge.

Notes

  • Mai Tais are best served fresh for optimal flavor.
  • To make a non-alcoholic version, replace the rum with extra fruit juices and use rum flavoring or essence.
  • For a tropical twist, add pineapple juice or coconut cream.
  • To make a frozen Mai Tai, blend the ingredients with ice.
