These Jalapeño-Onion Smash Burgers offer a flavorful twist on the classic burger, combining the heat of fresh jalapeños with the sweetness of caramelized onions. Perfect for a cookout or casual meal, this burger recipe delivers a delicious balance of spicy, savory, and sweet in every bite.
1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche or your favorite type)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
2 slices of American cheese (or cheese of your choice)
Pickled jalapeños (optional, for added spice)
For the Jalapeño-Onion Topping:
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 fresh jalapeños, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for caramelizing the onions)
Salt and pepper to taste
Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden, about 20 minutes. Add sugar halfway to speed up caramelization. Stir in jalapeños and cook for 2-3 minutes.
Prepare the Smash Burgers: Divide ground beef into 4 portions. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then smash the beef into thin patties. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 2 minutes until golden-brown, then flip and add cheese to melt.
Toast the Buns: Toast the buns in a skillet until golden and slightly crispy, about 2 minutes.
Assemble the Burgers: Spread mayonnaise (and mustard, if desired) on the buns. Place the burger patty on the bottom bun, top with the caramelized onions and jalapeños. Add pickled jalapeños for extra spice if desired. Place the top bun and gently press.
You can make the caramelized onions and jalapeños ahead of time and store them in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.
For a different cheese experience, try cheddar, pepper jack, or blue cheese.
If you like more heat, leave the seeds in the jalapeños.
