Hamburger Green Bean Casserole is the ultimate comfort food, offering a satisfying mix of savory beef, creamy mushroom sauce, tender green beans, and crunchy fried onions. It’s a crowd-pleaser that’s perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or any meal that requires a warm, hearty dish.

Ingredients

pounds ground beef

1 small onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 (14.5 oz) cans green beans, drained (or 4 cups fresh blanched)

1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup

½ cup sour cream

1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

1½ cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Stir in the green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and sour cream. Mix until well combined.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it evenly.
  7. Top the casserole with the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 1½ cups of crispy fried onions.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving to allow it to set.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with plant-based protein like lentils or tofu.
  • You can add other vegetables like mushrooms, carrots, or peas for extra flavor.
  • If you like spice, add chili flakes or diced jalapeños.
  • For an alternative topping, try breadcrumbs or crushed crackers instead of fried onions.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • This casserole can be frozen for up to 3 months, just let it cool completely before freezing.
