Ingredients

  • Warm milk
  • Active dry yeast
  • Granulated sugar
  • Unsalted butter, softened
  • Large egg
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:

    • Mix warm milk and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine softened butter, foamy yeast mixture, beaten egg, salt, and flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough:

    • Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook).
  • First Rise:

    • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
  • Shape the Rolls:

    • Punch down dough, divide into equal portions, and shape into balls. Arrange in a greased baking dish.
  • Second Rise:

    • Cover and let the rolls rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  • Bake:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with melted butter and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Serve:

    • Let cool slightly and enjoy warm with butter or your favorite spread.

Notes

  • Make-Ahead Option: Refrigerate the dough after the first rise for up to 24 hours, then bring to room temperature before shaping.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container for 2 days at room temperature or 5 days in the fridge. Freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheating: Warm in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 5–7 minutes or microwave for 15–20 seconds.
  • Variations: Try garlic herb rolls, honey-sweetened rolls, or cheese-filled versions for extra flavor.
