This Fluffy Frosting recipe is perfect for cakes and cupcakes, providing a light, airy texture with a smooth, marshmallow-like flavor. Easy to make, it holds its shape well and offers a glossy finish, making it ideal for decorating your favorite desserts. Whether for a special occasion or a simple treat, this homemade frosting will elevate your baking.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups white granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and cream of tartar. Cook over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to bubble (about 2-3 minutes).
  • While the sugar mixture is cooking, beat the egg whites and vanilla extract in a separate mixing bowl until soft peaks form (around 3-4 minutes).
  • Once the sugar mixture is ready, gradually add it to the egg whites while continuing to whip. Beat until stiff peaks form, which takes about 7-10 minutes.
  • Once the frosting reaches stiff peaks, it is ready to use. Apply to cakes, cupcakes, or other desserts as desired.

Notes

  • To neutralize any yellow tint in the frosting, add a drop of blue food coloring for a pure white appearance.
  • Substitute clear imitation vanilla extract for a more vibrant white frosting.
  • To make a richer frosting, use a blend of butter and shortening instead of just shortening.
  • If the frosting thickens too much after refrigeration, allow it to come to room temperature and re-whip to restore its fluffy consistency.
