Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon fresh orange zest

1 tablespoon fresh orange juice

1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add in the egg, vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice. Mix until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Flatten each cookie slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are golden but the centers are still soft.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, dust the cookies lightly with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.

Notes

  • For an extra creamy bite, try adding white chocolate chips to the dough.
  • If fresh oranges aren’t available, you can substitute orange extract for the zest and juice.
  • For a vegan version, replace the egg with a flax egg and use dairy-free butter and sugar.
  • For an extra burst of sweetness, drizzle the cookies with a simple orange glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice.
  • Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • To prevent cookies from spreading too much, chill the dough before baking.
