It combines the comforting texture of French toast with the sweet, caramelized topping reminiscent of crème brûlée, making it perfect for holiday mornings, special brunches, or any time you want to treat yourself.

Ingredients

1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

½ cup granulated sugar

¼ cup light brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, cold and diced

1 cup light brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and evenly arrange the cubed French bread within it.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, ¼ cup light brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour this custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to absorb the custard.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. For the topping, combine the remaining ¾ cup light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and cold diced butter in a bowl.
  7. Using a fork or your fingers, mix until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  8. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the soaked bread.
  9. Bake the casserole for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  10. Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave or the whole casserole in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven.
  • If making ahead, the casserole can be assembled and refrigerated overnight, allowing the bread to soak up the custard.
  • For extra crispy topping, sprinkle granulated sugar during the last 5 minutes of baking and broil for 1-2 minutes.
