Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast is a classic American comfort dish made with thinly sliced dried beef in a creamy white sauce, served over toasted bread. It's simple, hearty, and perfect for quick meals.

Ingredients

1 jar of dried beef slices, rinsed well and chopped

4 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Pinch of cayenne pepper

2 cups milk

Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Bread, toasted

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dried beef slices thoroughly to reduce saltiness. Pat them dry and chop into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add the flour and a pinch of cayenne pepper to the melted butter, whisking continuously until smooth and slightly golden, about 45 seconds.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Stir in the chopped dried beef and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  6. Season with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.
  7. Serve the creamed chipped beef over toasted bread slices.

Notes

  • Rinsing the dried beef reduces saltiness significantly.
  • Use thick toast to hold up the creamy sauce.
  • Reheat with a splash of milk to maintain creaminess.
  • Customize with herbs or cheese for added flavor.
