  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Cape Malay cook-in sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • ¼ cup mozzarella cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Additional Ingredients:

  • 250g lasagna sheets
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF).
  2. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, paprika, and oregano, cooking until the onion becomes soft.
  3. Add the ground beef mince and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, Cape Malay sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and beef stock. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring until the mixture thickens.
  4. Add ¼ cup mozzarella cheese, stirring until melted. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 3: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Lightly grease a baking dish and spread ½ cup of the meat sauce at the bottom.
  2. Add a layer of lasagna sheets, followed by a layer of meat sauce and cheese sauce.
  3. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce.
  4. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Place the lasagna in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
  2. Let it rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of red wine to the meat sauce while simmering.
  • To prevent a watery lasagna, make sure the meat sauce is thick and avoid overcooking the pasta.
  • For a crispy top, remove the foil for the last 5-10 minutes of baking.
