Amish Sloppy Joes are a wholesome, homemade twist on the classic American sandwich, featuring fresh vegetables, natural sweeteners, and slow-simmered flavors for a rich, comforting meal.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (or turkey)

1 medium onion, chopped

1 medium bell pepper, chopped

3/4 cup ketchup (homemade or organic preferred)

2 tablespoons brown sugar (or honey)

1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

46 soft white or brioche buns

Instructions

  1. Prep Ingredients: Dice the onion and bell pepper. Measure out the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce (if using).
  2. Brown the Meat: In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add Vegetables: Stir in the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for about 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are softened.
  4. Make the Sauce: Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  6. Assemble the Sandwiches: Toast the buns lightly if desired. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with the other half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Vegetarian/Vegan option: Substitute ground beef with lentils, black beans, or finely chopped mushrooms. Use plant-based sauces.
  • For spicier flavor, add chili flakes, diced jalapeños, or hot sauce.
  • Use gluten-free buns and sauces for a gluten-free version.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze the mixture for up to 3 months; thaw overnight before reheating.
  • Toast buns before assembling to prevent sogginess.
