Paula Deen's Foolproof Standing Rib Roast is a simple yet elegant recipe that yields a juicy, tender prime rib roast with a beautifully browned crust, perfect for special occasions and holiday feasts.

Ingredients

1 (5 lb) bone-in standing rib roast

1 tablespoon Paula Deen's House Seasoning

Paula Deen's House Seasoning:

1 cup salt

¼ cup freshly ground black pepper

¼ cup garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Allow the roast to stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. Rub the roast all over with 1 tablespoon of Paula Deen's House Seasoning.
  4. Place the roast on a rack in a roasting pan with the rib side down and the fatty side up.
  5. Roast the meat for 1 hour.
  6. Turn off the oven and leave the roast inside without opening the door for at least 3 hours (up to 6 hours is possible).
  7. About 30 to 45 minutes before serving, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Reheat the roast until a meat thermometer inserted into the center reads 120°F (49°C).
  9. Remove the roast from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For added flavor, stud the roast with 4–6 garlic cloves before roasting.
  • Add fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to the seasoning for an aromatic twist.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
  • For smaller roasts (2.5 lb), reduce initial roasting time to 30 minutes and reheating time to 20 minutes.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat slices at 300°F (150°C) for 10–15 minutes or with beef broth for juiciness.
  • Use a meat thermometer for doneness; 120°F (49°C) for medium-rare.
  • Boneless roasts can be used with the same cooking times.
  • Resting the roast for 10 minutes improves juiciness.
  • The recipe works for larger roasts; adjust initial roast time accordingly.
  • Increase initial roast time for a crispier crust and reduce oven-off time.
  • Leftovers can be frozen up to 3 months when properly wrapped.
