This Salisbury Steak recipe features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory gravy made with onions, mushrooms, and Worcestershire sauce. It's the epitome of comfort food, perfect for a hearty dinner.

Ingredients

pounds ground beef

½ cup breadcrumbs

1 egg

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

Salt and black pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons butter

1 small onion, thinly sliced

1 cup sliced mushrooms

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined, but do not overwork the mixture. Shape the mixture into 4 oval or round patties.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms, and cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to absorb the butter and onions. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  5. Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes, until it thickens. Return the patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the patties to soak up the flavors.
  6. Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, smothered in gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • You can add vegetables like carrots or peas to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • For a leaner version, you can use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • If you prefer a spicy version, add hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the gravy.
  • If you don't like mushrooms, you can omit them and increase the onions or use another vegetable of your choice.
  • This recipe can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for later reheating.
