Grilled Cheese Roll Ups are a fun and delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich. Soft white bread slices are rolled around melted cheddar cheese, then pan-fried to crispy perfection on the outside and gooey on the inside, making a perfect snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

8 thick slices of soft white bread

1.5 cups (150g) finely grated cheddar cheese

2 tbsp melted butter (or as needed)

Instructions

  1. Slice the crusts off each bread slice using a bread knife.
  2. Flatten each slice with a rolling pin.
  3. Place a small pinch of grated cheddar on each slice, leaving a small strip at one end free of cheese.
  4. Brush the cheese-free strip with melted butter.
  5. Carefully roll each slice tightly from the cheese side toward the buttered strip, sealing the roll. Place seam-side down on a plate.
  6. Brush the entire outside of each roll up with melted butter.
  7. Heat a dry non-stick pan over low to medium heat. Place the roll ups seam-side down in the pan.
  8. Fry the roll ups, turning frequently with tongs, until golden brown on all sides and cheese begins to ooze out. Cook in batches if needed.
  9. Remove and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use soft white bread with thick slices for pliability and crispiness.
  • Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded.
  • Brush the edge with melted butter to seal the roll ups and prevent unrolling.
  • Can bake at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes as an alternative to frying.
  • Serve with tomato soup, marinara sauce, or fresh salad for dipping.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 days; reheat in skillet or toaster oven for best texture.
  • Freeze uncooked roll ups individually wrapped; cook from frozen adding a few extra minutes.
