Bobby Flay’s Salisbury steak is a gourmet twist on a classic comfort dish. Featuring juicy, perfectly seasoned patties and a rich, savory gravy, this dish elevates traditional Salisbury steak with sophisticated flavors.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil (for searing)

1/2 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well combined. Shape the mixture into 4 equal patties.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and sear them for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the butter and let it melt. Add the flour and stir continuously to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture turns a light golden color.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the soy sauce and thyme (if using), and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes, allowing the gravy to thicken.
  5. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Cover and let everything simmer for another 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  6. Serve the Salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes or your favorite side dishes, spooning the gravy generously over the patties.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, swap the ground beef for a plant-based meat substitute or finely chopped mushrooms.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • For some heat, add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the patties or gravy.
  • Melt cheese on top of the patties during the last few minutes of cooking for a cheesy twist.
  • Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
